Senior Director - Medical Education Grants Office (MEGO)

Based in Wilmington, DE, you will lead the Medical Education Grants Office for the US, shaping strategy and delivering programs that empower healthcare professionals with timely, credible education. You will create clarity on priorities, speed up decision-making, and build the trusted processes that make independent education work at scale.

You will join an agile, purposeful team that blends scientific depth with real-world execution. Your leadership will accelerate how we identify educational needs, fund the most impactful initiatives, and measure what matters—so patients benefit faster from better-informed care.

Accountabilities:

  • US IME and Sponsorship Strategy: Set and execute the US strategy for independent medical education and sponsorships, aligning to therapeutic priorities while protecting independence, credibility, and compliance.

  • Portfolio and Budget Leadership: Oversee the annual $40–60 million grant and sponsorship budget; optimize allocation, forecasting, and tracking to maximize educational reach and measurable impact.

  • Operating Model Excellence: Own end-to-end grant processes from intake through closeout; streamline workflows, reduce cycle times, and uphold consistent, auditable decisions.

  • Governance and Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to company policies and external standards, including ACCME, FDA, and OIG; lead audits, corrective action planning, and continuous improvement.

  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Build trusted relationships across medical, brand, finance, procurement, sales, R&D, compliance, and global partners to ensure coherent, efficient delivery.

  • External Engagement: Represent the company with educational institutions, hospitals, professional societies, and education providers; uphold independence and scientific integrity in all interactions.

  • Global Integration: Connect US initiatives with global efforts to share learnings, standardize where valuable, and scale successful models.

  • Team Leadership and Talent Development: Lead Directors, Associate Directors, and Grant Specialists; set clear goals, coach for performance, and build succession strength.

  • Communications and Marketing for MEGO: Develop and execute communications that appropriately raise awareness of independent grant opportunities and processes with eligible external stakeholders.

  • Performance Measurement and Insights: Define and track metrics on quality, compliance, and educational outcomes; guide research and development for educational grants, including needs assessments and gap analyses.

 Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree

  • Pharmaceutical or relevant industry experience

  • Management and budget accountability

  • Proven leadership and expertise in medical education

  • Strong communication and executive presence

  • Ability to travel (15–20%)

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Advanced scientific degree and/or business experience

  • 10+ years of pharmaceutical experience

  • Experience in educational program development

  • Knowledge of AstraZeneca systems and industry standards (FDA, EFPIA, ACCME, etc.)
