MSL Regional Director West, Hematology/Nehprology
This is what you will do:
The MSL Regional Director (RD) plans, directs, coordinates and supports field activities of the MSLs within a specific region to achieve medical objectives within the respective Global Medical Affairs (GMA) therapeutic area. The Regional Director works closely with the other MSL Regional Director(s) for the therapeutic area and cross-functionally within GMA to identify, develop, and implement local MSL strategies and tactics and monitor results, in alignment with global medical and US business strategy, reporting to the US Medical Affairs Therapeutic Area Head.
You will be responsible for:
- Deploy regional resources to support and ensure attainment of business objectives. This includes adhering to regional fiscal budgets, dissemination of scientific information within corporate regulatory and compliance guidelines, managing team and individual performance within their duties, regional project management and quantifying and reporting regional results.
- Direct, coordinate and support the activities of the MSLs within a designated geographic region to achieve medical objectives within a therapeutic area. This includes coaching and mentoring for a designated number of MSLs
- Work cross-functionally within Alexion to identify, develop, and implement MSL strategies and tactics while monitoring results and compliance.
- Responsible for evaluation of the treatment landscape of the therapeutic area from the medical perspective in the region.
- Assist the US Medical Affairs TA Head with medical strategy and tactical plan development, and implementation, impact goal achievement, and quantification of results at the field level.
- Maintain/continue to develop medical & scientific knowledge of designated therapeutic area, including current treatment strategies, current and pending competitors, and new therapeutic developments. Continually educate self on US and global market issues / trends and product knowledge as it pertains to US Medical Affairs priorities.
- Proactively analyze local and regional medical needs by working in conjunction with the clinical and commercial organizations to identify opportunities where MSL function can contribute to achieving the aligned strategic goals.
- Ensure MSL team members maintain adequate communication & interaction with field colleagues when appropriate and according to compliance and regulatory guidelines.
- Ensure MSLs have the necessary tools, training, & materials to perform effectively & efficiently
- Responsible for providing consistent and timely feedback to MSLs regarding their individual performance & progress, including goalsetting, annual performance reviews, growth and succession planning, and real time field reports based upon regular field travel.
- Proactively address performance issues in accordance with Alexion’s guidelines.
- Ensure MSL team members update and maintain all required databases with current and complete information. Ensure appropriate documentation of KOL interactions and responses to unsolicited requests, provide oversight, communicate potential issues to respective functions to ensure timely resolution.
- Appropriately allocate resources as requested to support franchise and business initiatives. Insure cross functional integration of the MSL team at the field level in alignment with strategy and as appropriate within regulatory and compliance guidelines.
- Contribute to/lead special projects with overall organizational impact at request of TA Head.
- Continuously strive for improvement, e.g. by identifying new projects that may enhance US Medical Affairs success and providing proposals to Sr. management.
- Serve as mentor and trainer for other managers and new hires.
- Identify cross-functional integration opportunities of MSL roles & activities at field level.
- Communicate regional activities & results to TA Head & other cross-functional leadership.
- Ensure team member adherence to regulatory and compliance guidelines and Alexion policies in all aspects of scientific dissemination of information.
You will need to have:
- Advanced degree in scientific discipline required; MD, PharmD, or PhD in biological sciences a plus
- Greater than or equal to 7 years of demonstrated leadership success in the following areas: pharmaceutical field-based experience (e.g. MSL) and/or pharmaceutical industry related experience.
- Minimum 4 years management experience, experience managing a field medical team is a plus
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with peers and cross-functionally with partners outside of the team
- Ability to manage complex projects in a highly matrixed environment
- Ability to lead through influence in a highly matrixed environment involving a broad range of stakeholders
- Ability to be an agent of change with demonstrated agility to lead through rapid change & uncertainty
- Experience in hematology/nephrology therapeutic area or related fields considered a plus
- Must live in Central, Mountain, or West Time Zone
- The duties of this role are generally conducted in a field environment. The annual base pay for this position ranges from $212,600- $319,000. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles).
