Controlling Manager, European Countries

Location: Warsaw

Hybrid Model: 3 days per week from office

The Controlling Manager role is central to driving financial accuracy, robust governance, and process excellence throughout the European region.

Reporting directly to the Head of GFS Controlling Team, this role partners with Group Financial Reporting, GFS Process Towers, and key stakeholders across AstraZeneca’s European operations.

Accountabilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead and develop a high-performing team of over five finance professionals, fostering engagement, setting clear expectations for excellence, and actively supporting each individual’s professional growth and career progression.
  • Policy Ownership: Take full responsibility for process delivery and ensure the standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to financial controlling for European entities are in use, embedding strong governance and control measures.
  • Compliance Management: Act as control owner for SOX controls in team scope, ensuring compliance and alignment with requirements while reducing eventual exception volumes over time.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement ongoing improvements to financial processes, focusing on efficiency, accuracy, and process simplification across European businesses.
  • Automation & User Experience: Steer advancements in automation solutions and actively seek to enhance the financial user experience through technology-enabled innovations.
  • Audit & Standardisation: Ensure prompt action on audit recommendations, drive further standardisation efforts, and monitor the ongoing effectiveness of established controls.
  • Strategic Project Support: Support European and finance transformation initiatives as the process expert for controlling, contributing to projects such as SAP harmonisation and the Axial/S4 programme.
  • Master Data Collaboration: Flag any significant master data challenges for resolution with the designated Master Data Strategy Lead and maintain high standards of data integrity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build trusted relationships with other process owners and finance teams, championing process improvement opportunities wherever identified.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong Financial Controllership: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and workstreams within complex organisational contexts.
  • Policy & Standards Development: Experience developing, deploying, and monitoring adherence to policies, standards, or SOPs.
  • Transformation Leadership: Track record of supporting finance transformation projects.
  • Influencing & Networking: Proven skills in negotiation, influence, and consensus-building within a global matrix environment.
  • Finance Best Practices: Expertise in executing best-in-class finance practices and refining processes to meet evolving business needs.
  • Innovation Driver: Evidence of implementing automation and developing innovative solutions with notable business impact.
  • Regional Experience: Background working within multi-country organisations, managing diverse financial requirements.
  • SAP & Reporting Systems: Advanced user experience with SAP and group financial reporting tools.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Business Change Implementation: Previous experience leading change initiatives.
  • SOx Environment Experience: Familiarity with SOx controls, and/or exposure to Blackline or similar financial system platforms.
  • Process Design & Enhancement: Understanding of end-to-end process structure in a complex, multinational landscape.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years’ experience in Finance, preferably GL
  • Education: Master’s degree in finance
  • Languages: English – fluent
