Senior Principal Scientist

This position provides scientific leadership for Early Chemical Development in the US. The role focuses on establishing relationships with and supporting Oncology Discovery Chemistry (and partner departments) to facilitate the smooth transition of projects to Development. Additionally, the individual will build new scientific collaborations in the Boston area to develop Pharmaceutical Sciences’ capability in Kendal Square. Support is also expected for Isotope Chemistry within Early Chemical Development, providing global expertise and local support for RIC (Radioimmune Conjugate) projects. The individual will have extensive knowledge of drug discovery and clinical drug development (including labelled substances) as well as experience in establishing and developing collaborations in new scientific and technical areas.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure connectivity between Discovery functions in Boston and Early Chemical Development to allow smooth transition of projects from Discovery to Development.
  • Work across the Boston scientific and technological landscape to develop new partnerships and collaborations supporting Pharmaceutical Sciences activities.
  • Provide expertise in Isotope Chemistry to Early Chemical Development.
  • Support Early Chemical Development projects at external CDMOs (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisations) with a focus on Isotope Chemistry.
  • Provide expert support in the US to AstraZeneca RIC projects as required.
  • Provide departmental scientific leadership globally for Early Chemical Development and locally for Pharmaceutical Sciences in Boston.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Broad specialist knowledge of organic synthesis, including expertise in Isotope Chemistry.
  • Extensive experience in Drug Discovery and Development, with detailed understanding of application of Process Chemistry, Isotope Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry.
  • Experience working with CDMOs (including to cGMP) to deliver projects.
  • The individual should also have an extensive track record of establishing collaborations with external parties to drive scientific innovation. This should be supported by a world-class publication record.
