Global Financial Services (GFS) was formed in Q3 2018 through the merger of Global Finance Operations, Integrated Finance Solutions and Cash Generation. GFS is at the heart of the Finance function - accountable to the AstraZeneca (AZ) Group for the design and delivery of high quality, simple to operate transactional finance processes that enable our customers to focus on AZ’s strategic priorities.
The creation of the Global Financial Services (GFS) centers in Warsaw (Poland), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and San José (Costa Rica) will transform the AZ Middle Office and Back Office to a central function, supporting the business regions through simplification, standardization across the globe, and a structure that is scalable to support the bold ambition of becoming a $50bn company by 2025.
We have exciting opportunities to join our GFS Center in San José, which will establish best practices and be responsible for providing support to embedded finance (CFOs and country business partners and or BPs in Manufacturing).
Role Profile
As aControlling Manager you will be leading a team of 6-13 analysts approximately to provide support to financial controlling activities spanning month end financial management, Balance Sheet Governance, execution and monitoring of SOX/Financial Controls, external reporting to Tax and Statutory Reporting authorities and supporting Group Treasury processes.
For commercial regions in controlling, you may also be expected to support the Country Controller and any other relevant client in ensuring that statutory reports are submitted to authorities on time and collect necessary data for external auditors and prepare other statistics and central bank reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
As a Controlling Manager, you will play an essential role in supporting the Controlling Associate Director in the delivery of the team objectives. This includes leading the team, building knowledge and driving the culture within GFS.
You will be the subject matter expert and point of escalation for your team supporting them in both their day-to-day activities and professional development.
You may be required to use your expertise to lead or contribute to special projects across GFS.
Line Management
- Responsibility for managing and motivating a team of 6-13 Business Analysts, ensuring that the team delivers to the highest standard of customer service whilst adhering to global process and all relevant financial controls.
- Management and allocation of resource across the Business Analyst team.
- Building excellent working knowledge of customer requirements and business drivers which are shared and understood by your team of Business Analysts.
- Build a high-performance, growth culture by implementing individual development plans, regular coaching and feedback loops, skills matrices, and structured succession planning for critical roles within the team.
- Orchestrate cross-functional change (GFS, CFO org, markets) by setting clear outcomes, engaging stakeholders early, managing risk and adoption, and measuring benefits.
- Elevate team capabilities in business partnering, data literacy, and continuous improvement.
- Responsible for month end close process for Americas region, ensuring timely & accurate delivery of financial information to stakeholders.
- Ensure strong control environment across region – FCF (Financial Control Framework).
- Business Partnering with Senior Management, Marketing Company & GFO.
- Executive reporting.
- Financial Acumen of the Revenue, BS Variance Analysis, BS Account Reconciliation, Volume / price, Opex, FTE, LRP, Forecast, Budget and Cost with robust basis is essential to perform in a good shape this position.
- Cash and Capex Management.
- As an individual contributor, all the tasks related to Controlling.
Essential Criteria
- Qualified finance professional: 8+ years in accounting/controlling; strong MS Office and SAP proficiency.
- Leadership and talent development: Leads by example; proven team supervisory/people management experience (2+ years); builds engagement through coaching, development plans, feedback, and succession planning.
- Strategic, proactive, and results-oriented: Connects controllership to enterprise value; prioritizes effectively and drives standardization and simplification.
- Change, resilience, and stakeholder influence: Manages change with emotional intelligence; collaborates across GFS, FP&A, P2P, C2C, Ops, and customer-oriented environments, including remote and cross-cultural settings.
- Communication and business partnering: Delivers clear insights and explains financials to non-financial stakeholders; supports decision-making and meets SLAs for ad hoc and project needs.
- Governance and controls: Ensures corporate governance and effective operation of financial reporting controls.
- GFS process knowledge: Strong understanding of finance processes within GFS Global Services.
- Insight-driven analytics: Applies driver-based analysis and executive storytelling to influence commercial and operational outcomes.
- Continuous improvement mindset: Identifies and implements simplification opportunities; embeds learning rituals to uplift team capability.
- Customer orientation: Demonstrates service excellence, building trusted relationships with business partners and stakeholders.
- English language proficiency: Fluent verbal and written communication
- University Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related fields
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Pharma Industry.
- Experience of working in a matrix organisation.
Other Role Requirements
- Schedule flexibility to work on holidays when necessary.
- Flexibility and Ability to travel and work in another AZ facilities outside the country when necessary.
- Schedule flexibility to work on the days off given by the wellness Policy when necessary (Política de Bienestar).
Internal and External Contacts/Customers
Will interact with other Shared Services functions, Business CFOs/Finance Business Partners and 3rd party service providers.
