Engineering Team Lead (Squad Lead) Evinova
Are you ready to be part of the future of healthcare? Can you think big, be bold, and harness the power of digital and AI to tackle longstanding life sciences challenges? Then Evinova, a health tech business part of the AstraZeneca Group, might be for you.
We are building software that transforms clinical trials for billions of patients worldwide. Evinova delivers market-leading digital health solutions that are science-based, evidence-led, and human experience-driven. We combine deep scientific expertise with modern software engineering and artificial intelligence to create new standards across the sector.
About Our Engineering Organization
Our Product Engineering organization consists of cross-functional squads with the people and skills needed to deliver innovative digital products to patients and healthcare providers in clinical trials worldwide. We ship on quarterly program increments using agile methodology.
We are proud to have one of the strongest software development teams in the health tech space, with deep technical and domain skills. This is a place where you build real things, solve hard problems, and grow alongside engineers who care deeply about their craft and its purpose.
About the Role
As an Engineering Team Lead (Squad Lead), you will lead a cross-functional squad of around 6 ± 3 people, including software and test engineers. Your role is to help the team deliver well, work well together, and continuously improve.
This is a people and delivery leadership role with meaningful exposure to product and engineering decisions. You will not be expected to act as the principal architect for the product area, but you should bring enough technical depth to engage credibly with engineers, support sound trade-offs, and help move delivery forward when complexity arises.
The team works across capabilities that support the Unified Trial Solution, including web applications, backend services, configuration and content management capabilities. The role is about helping the team deliver with clarity, quality, and momentum in a setting where user needs, cross-team coordination, and regulatory expectations all matter.
Key Responsibilities
Leading the squad
- Lead and support a cross-functional squad of software and test engineers, creating an environment where people can do their best work.
- Build a healthy, high-performing team culture grounded in trust, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Coach team members in their development, encourage knowledge sharing, and help establish sustainable ways of working.
- Partner with the Principal Software Engineer Lead to support recruitment, onboarding, and continued team growth.
Driving delivery
- Help the squad deliver roadmap commitments with quality and predictability through effective planning, prioritization, and removal of blockers.
- Drive agile ways of working across the squad, including sprint ceremonies, team planning, and participation in PI Planning.
- Support the team in balancing delivery pace with technical quality, managing dependencies, and maintaining transparency around progress and risks.
- Create clarity when priorities compete, scope shifts, or multiple stakeholders need alignment.
Working across teams and stakeholders
- Work closely with product, design, and engineering stakeholders to understand goals, refine scope, and align delivery with roadmap priorities.
- Facilitate collaboration across teams where features, dependencies, or shared capabilities require coordination.
- Help ensure that the software the squad delivers aligns with user needs, business goals, and the expectations of a regulated clinical trial environment.
Supporting technical delivery
- Contribute to technical discussions with engineers and architects, bringing enough software engineering depth to support decision-making and challenge assumptions when needed.
- Help the team make sound trade-offs across frontend, backend, quality, and delivery concerns, while relying on technical specialists where appropriate.
Support a culture of engineering quality through attention to detail, continuous improvement, and close collaboration with the people closest to the code.
Minimum Qualifications
- You have an education on at least a Bachelors degree level
- You have experience leading teams or carrying significant delivery responsibility in a cross-functional software environment, ideally including around 2 years in a team lead, squad lead, delivery lead, or similar role.
- You bring at least 5 years of hands-on software development experience and a solid understanding of modern software engineering practices.
- You have experience working across frontend and backend software delivery and can engage credibly with engineers on technical trade-offs.
- You collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and business functions and communicate confidently in spoken and written English.
- You have experience working with agile methodologies such as Scrum. Experience in scaled delivery environments such as SAFe is an advantage.
Desired Qualifications
- You have experience with, or interest in, contributing to technical design, architectural discussions, and code-level problem solving.
- You have worked with modern frontend technologies such as React.
- You are familiar with regulated software development practices, including GxP.
- You have experience with, or interest in, taking on formal line management responsibilities over time.
- You hold a Scrum Master or Agile Coach certification.
- You have experience in healthcare, digital health, or life sciences.
What This Role Is Not
- A purely administrative management position removed from the day-to-day realities of delivery.
- A principal architect role that owns all major technical decisions across multiple squads.
- A project coordination role focused only on ceremonies, reporting, or status tracking.
