Role background

At AstraZeneca, our Innovation and Business Excellence (IBEX) team is pushing the boundaries of technology in support of transforming healthcare delivery.  As an organization we are focused on creating connected customer experiences both in person and by levering digital.  Within medical affairs we have a rigorous focus on ensuring the HCP experience centers on unmet patient needs, and better patient outcomes.

This role scopes across the various therapy areas in AZC to shape the future through optimizing the use of new technology and digital resources in support of the scientific engagement plans of medical affairs.  A key area of focus is building the Medical Omnichannel approach, and in this role you will help build the strategy, create deliverables and measure impact.

The MDIL role bridges Medical teams to IBEX & IT, identifying digital opportunities for medical and areas for advancing omnichannel delivery.  The role also provides leadership in the new area of measuring outcomes of digital and omnichannel initiatives by medical.

The role partners with the global Medical Operations, Innovation and EuCan regional MedEx teams to understand and mold global medical omnichannel strategy for the Canadian Market, and to bring new platforms from Global to the local market.

Successful execution in this role requires effectively shaping the strategy and proficiency in enabling impact through strong partnering with cross-functional teams in a matrix organization.

The Medical Digital and Innovation Lead role will lead the launch and implementation and monitoring of new digital systems and tools within AZC Medical Affairs that will help deliver on AZC Innovation strategy supporting AZ Transforming Healthcare Delivery goal.  This digital lead role will develop a sustainable workstream for delivery of digital and omnichannel Medical strategy.

The MDIL role will focus on 2 main areas:

Medical OMNI and Digital Enablement

  • Lead the development and execution of omnichannel medical strategies to enhance HCP experience across digital engagement channels (e.g., email, web, social listening, digital content).
  • Partner with Medical, MSID, IBEX, and IT teams to integrate medical strategy into the AZC connected customer experience framework.
  • Drive OMNI change management and capability-building plans in collaboration with the Medical Excellence Lead.
  • Support therapy area teams in designing and executing digital campaigns, customer journeys, personalization strategies, and digital content using best practices and compliant processes.
  • Monitor and optimize digital campaign performance through defined metrics, KPIs, dashboards, and reporting in partnership with IBEX and Global Operations.
  • Implement innovative approaches to digital engagement, including new channels, partnerships, and ways of working.
  • Lead the local Medical Digital and Innovation strategy aligned with global priorities and scientific affairs objectives.

Medical Systems, Platforms and Digital Tools

  • Serve as the local product owner for medical digital systems and tools (e.g., Veeva MedComms, CLM, CRM, KEE profiling platforms), including governance, sustainability, and adoption.
  • Drive innovative use of AI and digital technologies to enhance medical systems, processes, and customer engagement.
  • Partner with Global, IBEX, IT, and cross-functional teams to support system enhancements, local rollouts, and future Medical CRM capabilities.
  • Lead Medical data, analytics, and insight-generation workstreams to ensure reporting needs and strategic insights are effectively leveraged.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of local medical platforms, dashboards, and the AZMedical website in alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance, pharmacovigilance, patient safety, privacy, and information security standards across all digital initiatives.
  • Support capability uplift and adoption of new tools within field medical teams through effective communication, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration, best practice sharing, and process improvement projects to drive operational excellence and innovation.

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree or relevant business qualification

  • Experience in developing relationships with internal customers and suppliers

  • Deep experience of understanding (external) customer journeys and designing new customer experiences.

  • Experience of engagement and influencing of region level stakeholders

  • Strong track record of delivering digital solutions

  • Strong leadership capability with the ability to lead multi-disciplinary working groups and cross functional teams

  • Ability to work well in and across diverse teams

  • Strong networking and consulting skills

  • Strong communication and influencing skills

  • Strong change management skills

  • Proven skills of managing budgets, resources and timelines

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership ability in a team environment

  • Self-motivated, able to display autonomy and take initiative.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience and understanding of the Medical Affairs external engagement model and strategies.

  • Experience of driving digital transformation, channel strategy and digital analytics.

  • Understanding of the role of Scientific Affairs and value to the overall pharmaceutical enterprise

  • Experience with platforms and technologies used in delivering AZ digital strategy

  • Strong track record for multi-channel or omnichannel capability creation and a passion for all things digital

  • Understanding of the Canadian healthcare ecosystem

  • Working knowledge of Canadian privacy and IT security legislation would be considered an asset

Annual base salary for this position ranges from 145,156.00 to 190,517.25.

AstraZeneca is committed to providing fair and equitable compensation opportunities to all colleagues. Our compensation policies and practices have been designed to allow colleagues to progress through the salary range over time as they progress in their role. The range provided in this posting represents an offer pay range used in a majority of situations. The base pay offered will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including the candidate's skills and experience, job-related knowledge, and other specific business and organizational needs.  In some cases, offers outside the range may also be considered to address unique circumstances.

In addition, our permanent positions offer an annual Variable Pay Bonus/Short Term Incentive opportunity as well as eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (if applicable to role).  Benefits offered for permanent roles include a competitive Flex Benefits & Retirement Savings Program, 4 weeks’ paid vacation, and annual Personal Days. Fixed Term Contract/Temporary positions (excluding students) are offered a Contract Benefits Program.
