What will you be doing?

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a function within the AstraZeneca’s Biopharmaceuticals R&D unit and creates innovative, cost effect solutions by transforming molecules into investigative medicines meeting unmet needs of future patients! The function has several departments, including Early Chemical Development (ECD).

The ECD department’s responsibilities span from early engagement with Discovery Chemistry groups to manufacture of Phase II Clinical material, and its key skill areas include Analytical Chemistry, Crystallisation, Isotope Chemistry, Large-Scale Laboratory (Kilo-Lab) Manufacturing, Process Chemistry, Process Design, Process Engineering, Route Design, Particle and Separation Science.

In ECD, an exciting opportunity has arisen to support the chemistry group in their day-to-day activities. We are an industry-leading team of synthetic organic chemists who seek to design and execute the most cost-effective, sustainable routes and processes to small molecule pharmaceuticals as early as the pre-clinical phase.

As a member of this group, you will gain a lot of understanding around a variety of organic transformation methods and the factors affecting manufacturing sustainability and cost-of-goods with the ultimate goal of delivering a robust supply of high-quality Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) to the patient.

The role is based at the Macclesfield Campus, Cheshire. The role is primarily laboratory based.

What are we looking for?

“AstraZeneca has partnered with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences programme, to support chemists from minoritised racial and ethnic backgrounds pursue careers in the chemical sciences. This internship is being offered to the Broadening Horizons Cohort to support this programme and our commitments to it.”

Enthusiasm, professionalism, and a sense of fun are key to this role, as well as the ability to work as part of a team. You should be curious about industrial pharmaceutical chemistry and passionate about using cutting edge science to develop and deliver medicines which make a difference to patients’ lives. You should also have a good academic background and be prepared to apply your knowledge of pharmacy and the patient in a practical way.

This role is aimed at students who are interested in gaining practical work experience, developing their understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, building a network, and seeing where their skills may align with a future career within the pharmaceutical industry.

What can we offer you?

Summer Internship positions are available at our Macclesfield (Cheshire) site. Projects are available in Early Chemical Development in the process chemistry group. During the (8-12) week placement you will gain a useful insight into the pharmaceutical industry and the variety of opportunities available to Chemists within our organisation.

Applications will be open until 18th February 2025.

This placement will start on the 23/06/2025 - 29/08/2025 and you can expect to hear back from us by the end of March 2025.
