Job Title: Scientist, Animal Sciences and Technologies

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

As a Scientist of Animal Sciences and Technollgies, you'll provide hands-on preclinical research in multiple laboratory animal species.  You'll be responsible for the care and wellbeing of laboratory animals.  You'll generate data for a wide variety of study types.  In this role you must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Accountabilities

  • Conducts hands-on in vivo research in multiple laboratory animal species.  Mouse and rat experience required.

  • Responsible for the care and wellbeing of laboratory animals.

  • Generate data for a wide variety of study types including safety studies.

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Manages own work to ensure that agreed targets are met in a timely manner and to agreed quality standards, communicating progress appropriately.

  • Contributes to the plans and designs of in vivo studies, provides general technical and scientific advice on specific projects and studies.

  • Liaise with scientists with the cross-functional purpose of discussing project-related matters, sharing experiences and reporting progress.

  • Ability to perform animal husbandry tasks for a variety of species, routine facility operations tasks, identifies and reports any abnormal findings, and maintains the highest standards of animal care and welfare.

  • Expected to maintain current knowledge in Laboratory animal sciences, e g. through Continued Professional Development (CPD), collaboration with peer scientists or contacts by other internal groups.

  • Expected to modify or improve processes and systems, depending on purpose of experiments.

  • Willingness to work with radioactive materials, infectious agents, and hazardous materials.

  • Ensures that work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Standards (GLS).

Essential Skills/Experience

  • ​BSc degree or equivalent or relevant experience within the discipline (1-3 years)

  • Responsibilities include technical procedures such as animal idntification, collecting biological samples, administering test articles via varios routes of administration and necropsy in mice and rats. IV dosing, blood collection (various routes), and strong necropsy skills preferred.

  • Accurate documentation of tasks performed.

  • Generates clear, complete and accurate data sets, including the documentation of raw data in computerized data capturing systems and on hand-written records.

  • Ability to work flexibly across different areas and participate in provision of weekend and out of hours support.

  • Effective communication skills are critical.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in blood collection methods in rodents (submandibular collection)

  • Experience in various dosing routes in rodents (SQ, IP, IV, PO)

  • Rat handling and technical experience

  • Rat and mouse necropsy skills

  • Ability to lead a small in vivo sciences project.

  • Problem-solving skills related to in vivo research and data analysis

  • Understanding of the principles and concepts associated with own subject/specialist area and an appreciation of the relevant science and literature

  • Problem-solving skills related to in vivo research and data analysis

  • Understanding of internal compliance systems 

  • Good communication skills

  • Fluent in verbal and written English language

The annual base pay (or hourly rate of compensation) for this position ranges from$65,516.00 - $98,274.00 USD Annual.Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
