Senior Consultant - Snowflake
Job Title: Senior Consultant – Snowflake
Career Level: D1
Introduction to role:
Are you ready to shape a modern data platform that turns complex data into faster, smarter decisions? In this role, you will help define and evolve our Snowflake platform, enabling teams across AstraZeneca to deliver secure, reliable, and high-performing data solutions that directly influence how we discover and develop life-changing medicines.
You will join a mission-focused team accelerating our digital journey—uniting technology and expertise to improve how we interpret data and make decisions. Imagine empowering hundreds of data engineers with self-serve tooling and guardrails, all while integrating Snowflake with a rich ecosystem of adjacent platforms to drive real business impact. If you want to see your platform thinking translate into outcomes for patients and the company, this is where you can do it.
Accountabilities:
Platform Architecture and Enablement: Translate engineering use cases into scalable, secure Snowflake designs and configurations that unlock efficient use of warehouses, tasks, data sharing, Snowpark, and dynamic tables—so teams can deliver faster without compromising safety.
Service Maturity and Integration: Extend and mature the Snowflake service by integrating with adjacent platforms and services such as Databricks, Kafka, data catalog/lineage tools, and API gateways; build and optimize self-serve templates for onboarding, environments, and pipelines to reduce time-to-value.
Privacy, Access, and Governance by Design: Assess, architect, and implement complex access control and data privacy solutions using RBAC, ABAC, row/column-level security, masking policies, tags, and data domains—simplifying governance to improve cost efficiency and operability.
Automation and Operational Excellence: Automate metadata management, cost controls, and operational insights; design reporting for cost governance, reliability (SLOs/SLIs), and adoption metrics; drive CI/CD pipelines, IaC, and test automation for Snowflake objects and integrations to create a repeatable, reliable platform.
Reliability, Performance, and Guardrails: Optimize compute, storage, and concurrency through warehouse sizing, caching, clustering, and materialization strategies; establish benchmarking, tuning practices, and guardrails that keep performance consistent at scale.
multi-functional Partnership: Collaborate with teams across AstraZeneca to standardize patterns, codify standard methodologies, and accelerate delivery—balancing platform safety, compliance, and speed to improve impact.
Essential Skills/Experience:
Enable data engineers: Act as a senior technical authority within the Snowflake platform team—translate engineering use cases into scalable, secure platform designs and configurations that unlock efficient use of Snowflake features (warehouses, tasks, data sharing, Snowpark, dynamic tables).
Mature and extend the service: Integrate Snowflake with adjacent platforms and services (e.g., Databricks, Kafka, data catalog/lineage, API gateways), evaluate and enable new Snowflake capabilities, and build/optimize self-serve tooling and templates for onboarding, environments, and pipelines.
Design for privacy and control: Assess, architect, and implement complex access control and data privacy solutions—leveraging RBAC, ABAC, row/column-level security, masking policies, tags, and data domains—while simplifying governance to improve cost efficiency and operability.
Automate operations and governance: Automate metadata management, cost controls, and operational insights—design and implement reporting for cost governance, reliability (SLOs/SLIs), and adoption metrics; drive CI/CD pipelines, IaC, and test automation for Snowflake objects and integrations.
Champion reliability and performance: Optimize compute, storage, and concurrency (warehouse sizing, caching, clustering, materialization strategies); establish performance benchmarking, tuning practices, and guardrails.
Partner across AZ: Collaborate with BTGs and product teams to standardize patterns, codify standard methodologies, and accelerate delivery—balancing platform safety, compliance, and speed.
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Deep expertise in SQL and Python for Snowflake, including Snowpark and UDFs
- Hands-on experience with Databricks, Kafka, and streaming data integrations
- Practical knowledge of data cataloging, lineage, and tagging strategies at scale
- CI/CD for data platforms using Git-based workflows and pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions)
- Infrastructure as Code for Snowflake and cloud resources (e.g., Terraform)
- Designing and implementing SLOs/SLIs, observability, and performance benchmarking for data platforms
- Cost optimization strategies and chargeback/showback models in Snowflake
- Experience operating in regulated environments with strong compliance requirements
- Strong stake holder management, communication, and the ability to influence platform adoption
- Relevant certifications (e.g., SnowPro Advanced, cloud provider certifications)
