Accountabilities:
We are looking for a highly collaborative Senior Director, Diagnostic and Human Biological Samples (HBS) Science, who will be accountable for leading innovative diagnostic science to fulfil precision medicine approaches. You’ll achieve this by overseeing the development of innovative molecular, tissue and protein based diagnostic tests across our portfolio of projects as they prepare for Phase 3 Investment Decision (Ph3ID) with line of sight to use in clinical trials, regulatory submissions and in market testing. This will include leading internal routine laboratory operations and capability growth via our Research and Development (R&D) and College of American Pathologists (CAP)-Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) accredited laboratories and strategic partnering to deliver diagnostic tests and tools.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with colleagues within the Precision Medicine and Biosamples function and teams throughout AstraZeneca to deliver expertise to relevant drug product teams and the AZ clinical portfolio. This role will also include collaboration with external diagnostic partners and testing laboratories.
As a senior member of the Precision Medicine and Biosamples team you may have responsibility for line and/or project matrix management of staff members, ensuring that all activities are delivered demonstrating behaviours and values aligned to the AstraZeneca code of conduct and supporting policies, standards and procedures including compliant management of budget, safety, health and environment.
Essential Skills/Experience:
Masters/PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area
Experience of leading a CAP/CLIA or equivalent testing laboratory
Experience of developing diagnostic assays in a regulated environment e.g. under In Vitro Diagnostics development standards or within a CAP/CLIA laboratory
Expertise with one, or more, of the following technologies IHC, ISH, PCR, NGS, ELISA, digital pathology, emerging diagnostic technologies
Understanding of diagnostic development and clinical testing standards and regulations such as Good Clinical Practice, CAP/CLIA, relevant FDA and EMA guidelines
Operational experience of setting up clinical diagnostic testing
Ability to lead projects and teams in a matrix environment
Ability to communicate clearly and influence stakeholders while keeping balanced and objective views
Demonstration of a broad lab-based science and technical background
Proven leadership ability and portfolio management, global team working and line management experience
Desirable Skills/Experience:
Experience of Precision Medicine approaches and diagnostic development in Oncology
Experience interacting with In Vitro Diagnostics regulatory authorities and commercialisation
Experience in drug clinical development and clinical trial design and conduct
Proven track record of working with third parties, both commercial and academic
