Principal Scientist of Genomic Medicine

As a Principal Scientist in the Genomic Medicine Department at Alexion – AstraZeneca Rare Disease, you will be at the forefront of developing groundbreaking therapies for genetic cardiomyopathies. Your expertise in cardiac biology and non-clinical development will drive programs from early discovery through IND-enabling studies. Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and key opinion leaders to lead cross-functional efforts and push the boundaries of scientific innovation!
Accountabilities:
- Lead programs targeting genetic cardiomyopathies from discovery through preclinical development and IND submission.
- Identify and validate novel therapeutic targets; design and optimize therapeutic strategies.
- Design, implement, and coordinate in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate efficacy and safety of therapeutic candidates.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with pharmacology, toxicology, CMC, and translational science teams to align on non-clinical development strategies.
- Manage external partnerships with academic institutions, CROs, and KOLs.
- Provide scientific leadership and mentorship to junior scientists and team members.
- Present data and program updates to internal leadership and external collaborators.
- Support regulatory filings, publications, and scientific conference presentations.
Essential Skills/Experience:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cardiovascular Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years industry experience with deep expertise in cardiovascular biology and/or rare genetic diseases, particularly cardiomyopathies.
- Proven track record in precision medicine research and development, with a focus on AAV, LNP, or gene editing technologies.
- Proven scientific excellence through high-impact peer-reviewed publications and presentations at major scientific conferences.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Knowledge of PK/PD modeling and bioinformatics approaches in therapeutic development.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and experience with the IND-enabling process.
- Understanding of cardiac biomarker development to support pharmacodynamic and translational assessments.
