About the Team
The global bioinformatics team within Biologics engineering currently is operating across two sites in candidate, UK and Gaithersburg MD. We are expanding to Boston and are seeking an experienced Senior Scientist with strong expertise in data automation within a research laboratory environment. The role will support AstraZeneca’s KSQ AI Lighthouse, delivering end to end, AI ready data pipelines tightly integrated with high throughput laboratory automation.
The successful candidate will operate at the interface of data science, data engineering, and lab automation, working closely with wet lab scientists and automation engineers to ensure high quality, scalable data capture that enables advanced analytics and AI driven discovery.
Typical Accountabilities
Design, implement, and maintain automated data capture, curation, and analytics workflows supporting high throughput laboratory processes.
Integrate data streams from laboratory instruments, automation platforms, and orchestration systems into reproducible, auditable pipelines.
Ensure datasets are FAIR, AI ready, and suitable for downstream advanced analytics and machine learning workflows in collaboration with data scientists and IT.
Collaborate closely with science and lab automation teams to align data pipelines with experimental workflows and scientific intent.
Act as a key technical interface between wet lab scientists, automation engineers, and data platform teams.
Contribute to the evolution of lab in the loop workflows, supporting increasing automation and orchestration maturity.
Provide subject matter expertise in data automation best practices within a lab based research setting.
Support continuous improvement of data quality, robustness, and scalability across KSQ workflows.
Communicate clearly with diverse stakeholders across disciplines and sites.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Minimum bachelor's degree in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or other relevant discipline.
Senior Scientist level experience with ≥3 years’ hands on experience in data automation in a research laboratory environment.
Proven ability to work at the interface of data science/engineering and laboratory automation/IT.
Experience designing and integrating data pipelines linked directly to lab or instrument workflows.
Strong collaboration skills and experience working with wet lab scientists and automation teams.
Ability to operate independently while delivering in a complex, multi stakeholder R&D environment.
Working programming skills in Python(C++, Rust), frontend development e.g., streamlit; git code versioning
Data science proficiency ( Python, R)
Working data engineering knowledge, SQl and NoSQL databases, cloud environments and tech stacks.
Life-long learning attitude
Desirable Experience
PhD or MSc in Data Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology
Experience with platforms such as Genedata Biologics (GDB) is preferred.
Experience in high throughput biology, biologics engineering, or related life science domains.
Familiarity with AI/ML enabled discovery workflows and data products.
Exposure to digital lab transformation or lab of the future programmes.
NGS Workflow/Pipeline experience
Establishing AI based workflows and tooling; docker

The annual base pay for this position ranges from $115,057.60 - $172,586.40 USD Annual. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours. Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles), to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles), and commission payment eligibility (sales roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base pay (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
