As a Senior Statistician II at AstraZeneca, you will own critical design and interpretation work across preclinical and clinical programs, providing the evidence and clarity that move assets forward. You will operate independently on challenging problems, mentor others, and collaborate across disciplines to solve real-world questions in drug development. Accountabilities:

  • Study Design Leadership: Provide statistical expertise for complex study designs across preclinical and clinical programs, ensuring high-quality decision-making for governance forums, regulatory submissions, and commercialization.

  • Modeling and Simulation for Decisions: Analyze internal and external data, build models, and run simulations to inform design choices and decision criteria that de-risk development and optimize investment.

  • Statistical Analysis Planning: Develop rigorous Statistical Analysis Plans for complex studies and cross-study project deliveries, aligning methods to clinical and scientific objectives.

  • Results Interpretation and Communication: Analyze, interpret, and summarize complex study results, translating findings into clear, actionable insights for clinicians, regulators, and business partners.

  • Regulatory Excellence: Contribute to submissions by specifying statistical components of overviews and crafting high-quality responses to regulatory questions that stand up to scrutiny.

  • Coaching and Uplifting Others: Guide less experienced statisticians in producing analyses, graphics, and tables for reports, medical affairs studies, and publications; cultivate best practices and shared standards.

  • Methodology and Process Innovation: Identify opportunities to enhance design and delivery through novel statistical approaches; establish and improve standards that raise quality, efficiency, and reproducibility.

  • Advanced Methods Development: Investigate and apply new statistical techniques aligned with evolving regulatory guidance and value demonstration; iterate pragmatic solutions under tight timelines and refine thereafter.

  • External Engagement and Thought Leadership: Build collaborative links with external scientists and academia; contribute to conferences and journals to shape the scientific dialogue.

  • Quality Ownership and Continuous Learning: Be accountable for the quality of your statistical work; provide constructive challenge, seek coaching or training where needed, and lead or contribute to process and capability improvements that scale across the department.

​Essential Skills/Experience:

  • MSc/PhD in Statistics, Mathematics (containing a substantial statistical component), or recognised equivalent to stats MSc

  • Competent statistical programmer (SAS and R)

  • Knowledge of key technical and regulatory requirements

  • Experience of design, analysis and reporting of preclinical or clinical studies in more than one setting

  • Communication skills

  • Collaboration and team working skills

  • Experience and knowledge of statistical methods and applications in study design, analysis and interpretation

  • Collaboration required

  • Ability to apply statistical expertise to problems, problem solving and quality focus Key relationships to reach solutions

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience contributing to regulatory interactions or authoring statistical components of submissions

  • Demonstrated track record of methodological research, publications, or conference presentations

  • Proficiency with Bayesian methods, causal inference, adaptive and innovative trial designs, or real‑world evidence generation -

  • Familiarity with data science tooling beyond SAS/R (e.g., Python, version control, reproducible pipelines)

  • Experience mentoring statisticians and leading cross-functional statistical strategy discussions.

  • Exposure to decision science, program-level simulations, or portfolio optimization
