Sr. Director, Marketing - Public Vaccines

AstraZeneca’s near-term focus is supporting the global response to end the ongoing pandemic, including making our vaccine and prophylactic treatment options available once data demonstrate effectiveness against COVID-19. Scientific and medical experts believe COVID-19 will continue to circulate even after the pandemic ends. Therefore, AstraZeneca is building the capabilities to continue developing, manufacturing, and delivering innovative options to control COVID-19 disease. We are also supporting efforts to reduce the impact and burden of seasonal influenza. FluMist is the only nasal spray influenza vaccine in the US. These builds include a robust global commercial capability to ensure broad access and use of AstraZeneca’s disease prevention and treatment options.

Individuals with demonstrated commercial success, US and local launch experience, and vaccines/infectious disease backgrounds will be the foundation of our capability expansion. Additional required experience includes knowledge across a broad base of external customers and partners, effective cross-functional project team leadership, and the tenacity and resourcefulness to generate commitment among partners and deliver effective commercial strategies.

This role will develop our public health strategy and priorities for AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 and Vaccine Portfolio, and build advocacy in support of our strategic business priorities. They will also advance AstraZeneca’s relationship with principle government agencies and partners which influence local, federal and state health initiatives and policy. They will identify key opportunities to improve public health through our vaccines and medications, advancing the strength of immunization programs, treatment protocols, patient health initiatives, and AstraZeneca’s business priorities.

What you’ll do

  • Leads and develops public health and government funded specific vaccines strategy and marketing plans for assigned brands, which may include distribution channel solutions.

  • Lead and coordinate public health specific strategy through work with our marketing agencies, market insights team and direct customer engagement.

  • Participates in and evaluates market research and analyzes promotions, public relations, and advertising associated with assigned brands/products

  • Works closely with direct-to-consumer and managed markets teams to ensure successful positioning

  • Commercial lead and point of contact with CDC and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), as well as coordination of key communications with partner/advocacy groups and medical associations.

  • Represent AstraZeneca’s commercial needs in meetings with CDC and ACIP regarding vaccine public policy matters.

  • Engagement with local, state and federal personnel which influence and direct Awardees and Grantees for immunization and health programs

  • Work with AZ’s internal Advocacy and Alliance group to determine strategic partnerships and lead the commercial-centered education, communication and outreach efforts to those organizations (NFID, IAC, AAP, AAFP, patient advocate groups)

  • Conceive, conduct, manage, and evaluate strategic and tactical market-shaping plans to optimize vaccine uptake in the United States, ensuring sustainability and improved immunization rates.

  • Connect public health needs with brand value propositions, aligning strategy which best supports US health initiatives and establishes sound policy.

  • Participate in strategic, operational and planning support, including development and monitoring of strategic plans, annual objectives, and use of operating budgets.

  • Identify annual vaccine, disease prevention, and patient wellness priorities of the public health entities. Advise colleagues on appropriate areas of alignment and synergies.

  • Work cross-functionally with colleagues in commercial, medical affairs, market access, and communications to achieve business goals.

  • Develop future growth and infrastructure build related to public health and government funded vaccines programs.

  • Coordination and budget control for advocacy programs and group support and engagement, leading specific initiatives with each as appropriate to support brand and public health.

Essential for the role

  • Bachelors’ degree required; advanced degree preferred

  • 8+ years of demonstrated success working in vaccines marketing and the public health arena.

  • Experience and expert knowledge of the vaccines schedule, adult and pediatric

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and to manage up, down, and across to achieve results that protect and drive business growth

  • Demonstrated leadership ability to identify and focus on strategic priorities.

  • Ability to bring together different internal and external partners, and move an agenda forward to resolution and action.

  • Proven record in identifying issues affecting public health and/or the vaccine industry and advancing solutions which support both company business needs and public health.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to influence and effectively lead internal and external audiences to desired outcomes.

  • Ability to manage numerous, competing priorities under pressure while effectively collaborating with internal partners

  • Sound business judgement and integrity and an ability to build credible, effective working
