Senior Director, Program Management – Clinical Operations

We are looking for a Senior Director to join our Oncology Clinical Operations team to establish and provide global strategic leadership to a core group of individuals, as well as ensure delivery of operational and clinical development moving pieces of the clinical programs within scope.

Business Area:

Oncology Clinical Operations (Late Stage) is responsible for the program and study management of clinical projects designed to generate clinical evidence in support of a registrational strategy. Therapeutic expertise in oncology, project management capability and effective leadership of cross functional teams are critical capabilities that exist within the group to ensure strategic plans are translated into action.

What You’ll Do:

The Senior Director Oncology Program Management reports to the VP Oncology Clinical Operations (Late Stage) and is accountable for the quality of program management and clinical operations activities within the Oncology portfolio. In this role, you will work with the Global Medicines and Global Clinical Leads to ensure robust strategic and operational planning has been incorporated throughout the governance process, to oversee delivery of projects to plan and to drive standardization across a portfolio of work.

The job holder is a key route of issue escalation and problem resolution. They are also responsible for the recruitment, capability build, individual development and performance management of program managers (DCDs and ADCDs) in addition to contributing to functional related activities partnering with other Senior Directors in the group and across functions ensuring high quality contribution to process improvement initiatives.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • Communicate the business priorities and vision to staff ensuring adoption of globally agreed TA and clinical development strategies

  • Establish, direct and provide strategic global leadership for staff working on clinical studies in scope

  • Ensure delivery of all the operational and clinical development components of the global clinical programs within scope

  • Line manage Directors Clinical Development and Associate Directors Clinical Development

  • Assign capable TA Clinical Operations resources to meet the clinical drug project demands in collaboration with other departments and capacity management.

  • Work across the Oncology Clinical Operations group to develop, maintain and implement a clinical operations TA strategy for delivery of the overall immuno-oncology portfolio

  • Work across the Oncology Clinical Operations group to lead and develop the global customer interface and support model for the TA

  • Act as a key point of escalation for issues impacting across programs

  • Provide strategic leadership to drive projects and foster a performance driven global culture.

Additionally, as part of Oncology Clinical Operations leadership team, you will:

  • Sponsor Clinical Operations nondrug strategy & organizational infrastructures

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of delivery models/options provided by Clinical Operations, balancing customer needs and efficiency

  • Deliver agreed departmental activities within functional budget target

Essential for the Role:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

  • Extensive late stage Oncology Drug Development experience ideally including time in role as a Director Clinical Development (DCD) or equivalent in a previous organization

  • Line management expertise; experience of performance management of Associate Director level staff (experience of managing Director level staff desirable but not essential)

  • Demonstrated development of others, identifying and providing opportunities to improve the capabilities of other people

  • Experience in contributing meaningfully to Clinical Operations functional improvement initiatives that cross clinical programs

  • Functional management experience, managing resourcing, budget planning and functional level activities

  • Established and well-connected network with other TA Leaders, Development Operations Leadership and Early Development Oncology

Desirable for the Role

  • Advanced Degree

  • Significant experience in Clinical Development with knowledge of global operational program and study delivery

  • Proven experience in project management

  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical and pharmaceutical drug development processes in Oncology

  • Experience working internationally: working with major markets/resolution of international issues

  • Business planning skills: has knowledge/experience of planning processes used in managing drug projects

  • Risk and crisis management experience

  • Experience of leading successful teams from more than one national culture

  • Manage of cost center/department budget and contribute to Clinical Operations budget management

  • Manage project budget to threshold for assigned work packages
