F# Research Software Engineer – Biologics Engineering, Oncology R&D

Gaithersburg, MD

The Biologics Engineering team is responsible for the discovery and optimization of next generation biological drug candidates for all key therapy areas across AstraZeneca, and for developing in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs.

Central to this effort is the development of end-to-end data management and analysis capabilities to deliver novel biologics drugs. You will become part of an interdisciplinary Bioinformatics team, working at the cutting edge of research and development to create an active learning system for biologics engineering, in which model predictions guide lab experiments, lab automation generates high-throughput data for model training, and predictive models are updated as new data are generated.

As part of this effort, you will work closely with experts in data management, software engineering, lab automation, computational modeling and machine learning, with access to biologics R&D data across AstraZeneca and the potential to generate new data to inform predictive models.

What you’ll do

This role provides the opportunity for a talented and motivated research software engineer to develop experiment design and analysis software in F# that will significantly impact the delivery of the novel biologics drugs of the future.

  • Work collaboratively with scientists across Biologics Engineering to understand how they design laboratory experiments and analyse the resulting data. Use this knowledge to develop modular client-side web applications in F# that enable scientists to effectively design experiments and interactively analyse the results.
  • Develop software to automatically ingest data from lab automation equipment across Biologics Engineering and upload these data via web services to an end-to-end data management system based on Genedata Biologics.
  • Collaborate with machine learning experts to incorporate methods for designing novel biologics within web applications for use by scientists. Learn about leading machine learning methods for biologics design.
  • Collaborate with machine learning experts to develop an active learning system that continually trains machine learning models on data from biologics experiments and uses these data to inform subsequent experiments. Learn about leading machine learning methods for active learning applied to biologics experiments.

Essential for the Role

  • A master's degree or equivalent experience in computer science or in a relevant computational field.
  • Experience developing high-quality software in a functional programming language.
  • Experience with software development best practices.
  • A strong desire to learn about laboratory experiments for developing novel biologics therapies.
  • Experience working within a team environment.
